“No! You’re wrong. I can’t be. I’m too young! I don’t believe you! What would Joseph say!? Oh, my God! We’re getting married!”

“Okay,” said the man who had appeared out of nowhere and blown Mary’s life apart with his news. “I could have put that better than ‘Hi, Mary. You’re having a baby.’ Stay calm and I’ll try again.”

Taking out a sheet of paper, he continued: “Right, the name’s Gabriel and what I meant to say was: Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.”

“Yeah. Forget the script. In short, God has blessed you and has something important for you to do. You will have a baby and call him Jesus. Jesus is going to be great. People will call him the Son of God.”

“Wow!”

“One other thing. He will be the Son of God. He will be Holy. The Holy Spirit will come down from Heaven and you, Mary, will be pregnant with Jesus.”

“Jos…!”

“I’ll sort Joseph. He’ll understand. You’ll still get married and he’ll stay with you and the boy. Meanwhile, your cousin Elizabeth, who thought she was past having children, is also pregnant with a son. You might want to visit and compare notes.”

Mary looked up at Gabriel and said: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it happen as God has said.”

With a look of disbelief at Mary’s new tone, the angel disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived.
