The Autumn Riverside Ramble explored the 5 mile stretch of the Thames path between Caversham Bridge and Mapledurham Lock, and ended with a safe crossing of the river by boat to the Mapledurham estate (by kind permission of the manager), where we partook of refreshments from their tea room. The sun shone, the trees looked beautiful, and we were escorted along our way by a canoe manoeuvred by Charlie and Shirley Scola.

There was something of interest for everyone on this walk. Nigel is a Thames Path warden for this stretch of the path so was on the lookout for signs of erosion, dumping etc. Gill showed us plants of interest, Roger spotted Tiger Moths and Nigel pointed out the gantries on the railway line in preparation for electrification.

This walk was inspired by the plaque in St Margaret’s, dedicated to the memory of the unfortunate Purley vicar who drowned whilst on the ferry coming over to take evensong one night in December. Over a hundred years later, the water was calm and peaceful, the mill looked absolutely stunning and we gave thanks for our safe transportation, kindly provided by Rodney, over the water.

Our next meeting will be the Winter Ramble in the New Year which will include mulled wine and mince pies. All welcome and bring your sledges if snowy!
