A new Rector announced for Caversham and Mapledurham has spent the last eight years advising a bishop. The Rev Mike Smith will start his new ministry in March, when he becomes the parish priest for St Peter's, Caversham, St Margaret's, Mapledurham and St John the Baptist, Caversham, and leads the Church of England’s ministry to the parish.Mike Smith's ministry as a priest began 18 years ago and developed in urban and suburban parishes in Manchester until 2005. On Saturday 31st August, members of the Amersham Road Cooking Club (ARCC) took part in the estate community fun day. This year the fun day was organised by the Caversham Children’s Fund, a resident-run bi-weekly fun club for children aged 6-11. Hundreds of people attended over the course of the afternoon, so it was a great opportunity to introduce people to the cooking club.ARCC were involved in two ways. The Amersham Road Cooking Club is seeking to employ a development worker to promote the work of the cooking club which is run by local churches for children aged 7-11, and their families. The person will engage with and visit families, attend team meetings, and participate in cooking club sessions.The post-holder will need good inter-personal skills, be well-organised and enjoy working on an estate which faces issues of deprivation. Farewell Lunch
Sunday 16 June in the Rectory Garden
About forty members from all three churches met in the Rectory Garden to share lunch and to give Graeme and his family a good sendoff. The weather was a disappointment, but there were gazebos for everyone.Graeme's three years with us was honoured in speeches, gifts, and a specially-written psalm by the choir. We were saddened to learn of the death of Canon Richard Kingsbury, former Rector of Caversham, last week. The funeral took place at St. Gregory’s parish church in Bedale, North Yorkshire, on Monday, 17th June, at 2.30 p.m.It is hoped that there will be a memorial service for Richard at St Peter's later in the year.Funeral address by Canon Middleton

A number of applications were received for the post of Rector. However at the shortlisting meeting on 14 May with the Bishop it was agreed that none of the applicants had the right fit for the post so we would not be interviewing any of them. We will re-advertise in September with shortlisting and interviews due to take place in October.We understand this may be a disappointment, but it is not unusual to have to re-advertise. "Landlubbers" is a Holiday Club to be held in the Summer school holiday for 5 – 11 year olds from Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August. The five sessions will run from 10am to 3pm, and will take place at Thameside School.
