Who’s Who – Nigel Smith

Nigel SmithI have been a member of the St Peter’s congregation since moving to Caversham as a child in 1969. I am a former IT manager with over 25 years experience working in the insurance industry. Having retired early I now have various voluntary roles, the chief one being churchwarden of St Peter’s Church.

The role of churchwarden entails looking after the fabric of the building and churchyard. But as well as regular conservation and upkeep I would like to see the building developed and enhanced to improve the quality and diversity of our worship and to enable its greater use by the community we serve.

I have various other roles in the parish including that of chairman of Church House, our property in the centre of Caversham which provides affordable meeting space for various local organisations. Since becoming chairman in 2007 I have overseen various improvements to the building including major renovation work and the installation of a platform lift to improve wheelchair access.

Until I became churchwarden in 2014 I was, for 7 years, in charge of running our fete, a major fund-raising event which takes place annually in Caversham Court. I see the fete as a great opportunity for the church to underline its position at the heart of the community of Caversham.
