Changes to service times

The morning services were re-timed starting on September 6. The services at St Peters and St Johns begin at 9.30am, and the service at St Margarets at 11.15am.The new pattern of services is described on the Services page, and the reasons for the changes are in the August newsletter. Read more...

Jeremy Tear and family move to Warrington

After five years as Community Priest in the Parish of Caversham Thameside and Mapledurham, based at St John’s Church, Rev Jeremy Tear has accepted the offer of a new post at the West Warrington Team Ministry in the Diocese of Liverpool.St John’s Churchwarden, Richard Purkis said, “Jeremy’s initiatives have helped St John’s, St Peter’s and St Margaret’s to be more outward looking and mission minded. MillsTones Dance Band

The MillsTones Dance Band were welcomed back to St John’s on Saturday 18th July. The church was transformed, tables and chairs set out and a dance floor created for the evening. About 70 people came along to enjoy the big band sound. The MillsTones, with vocalist Tricia, played music from the ‘20s to the ‘60s. Numbers included George Gershwin’s “’S Wonderful”, Glenn Miller’s “Pennsylvania 6-5000” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “In the cool, cool, cool of the evening”. Summer music from the Hurst Singers

St John’s was the venue for a lovely summer’s evening of music, performed by the Hurst Singers, conducted by Len David. The choir and soloists Helen, Mari and Derek sang music in a wide range of styles. The opening number was “New York, New York “ and the programme included “Habanera” from Bizet’s opera “Carmen”, “Look what happened to Mabel” from the musical “Mack and Mabel” and a medley from “Les Miserables”. Ride and Stride 2014

The Ride+Stride is a fun day out for all the family that raises fund for historic churches.Ride+Stride is a sponsored bike ride or walk in which people from all over the county walk or cycle between churches, exploring and enjoying the countryside from Hook Norton to Henley, Burford to Bicester. The money raised helps to preserve some of Oxfordshire’s 650 churches, chapels and meeting houses that are at risk of falling into disrepair.All three churches took part in "Ride and Stride" on September 13, 2014. Last Day of Peace

Monday, August 3, 1914, dawned cool for the time of year. The weather was unsettled, like the continent of Europe. The harvest was being gathered around Mapledurham. It was the last day of peace for Britain as the hell of the Great War broke loose.The day before, Dick Cleare sang in the choir of St John the Baptist Church, next door to his home in Church Terrace, now part of Gosbrook Road. Amersham Road Cooking Club appointment

We are pleased to announce that Marilyn Hanson, a member of Caversham Baptist Church, has been appointed as the new Development Worker for the Amersham Road Cooking Club.Marilyn started her part-time six month temporary post on 1st May and has already made a significant contribution to the task of promoting the cooking club to children and their families on the estate, as well as helping to plan for and run the regular monthly Sunday afternoon sessions.
