The 2015 Parish Barn Dance was held at St John's on Friday 15 October. Local band Inisheer provided the music and caller Howard Ballard took us through the dances. It was a sell-out evening, with lots of fun and laughter and just under £300 raised for the parish. The Autumn Riverside Ramble explored the 5 mile stretch of the Thames path between Caversham Bridge and Mapledurham Lock, and ended with a safe crossing of the river by boat to the Mapledurham estate (by kind permission of the manager), where we partook of refreshments from their tea room. The sun shone, the trees looked beautiful, and we were escorted along our way by a canoe manoeuvred by Charlie and Shirley Scola.There was something of interest for everyone on this walk. The September 6th "Sporadic" ramble began at Mapledurham church and headed west to Hardwick House. After a climb we were able to look down on the house through the woods. Leaving the woods we were rewarded by views over Reading and Tilehurst and towards Goring, the air being exceptionally clear.Back at Mapledurham church we enjoyed tea, cake and flapjack. After five years as Community Priest in the Parish of Caversham Thameside and Mapledurham, based at St John’s Church, Rev Jeremy Tear has accepted the offer of a new post at the West Warrington Team Ministry in the Diocese of Liverpool.St John’s Churchwarden, Richard Purkis said, “Jeremy’s initiatives have helped St John’s, St Peter’s and St Margaret’s to be more outward looking and mission minded. The MillsTones Dance Band were welcomed back to St John’s on Saturday 18th July.
The church was transformed, tables and chairs set out and a dance floor created for the evening. About 70 people came along to enjoy the big band sound. The MillsTones, with vocalist Tricia, played music from the ‘20s to the ‘60s. Numbers included George Gershwin’s “’S Wonderful”, Glenn Miller’s “Pennsylvania 6-5000” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “In the cool, cool, cool of the evening”. St John’s was the venue for a lovely summer’s evening of music, performed by the Hurst Singers, conducted by Len David.
The choir and soloists Helen, Mari and Derek sang music in a wide range of styles. The opening number was “New York, New York “ and the programme included “Habanera” from Bizet’s opera “Carmen”, “Look what happened to Mabel” from the musical “Mack and Mabel” and a medley from “Les Miserables”.
